Default Just purchased a new S6 - a few newbie questions

So first, an intro . . . I'm an older guy who's owned way too many cars. From the mid-80s until five years ago, I drove BMWs up to and including the current-gen M5. For the past 15 years, I've also owned Porsche 911s. Five years ago, I finally jumped from my beloved BMW for all the reasons that many of us know well. I bought a B8 S4 MT and it became one of my all-time favorite cars. Good looking, good luxury, and go-kart handling. A fabulous car. But it was time to move on, and the day I knew was coming finally arrived. For almost 40 years, I've driven only manual transmission cars and finding an AWD sport/luxury MT car proved impossible (hint: the 340ix is not an answer).

Moving to an AT or auto-manual became pretty traumatic. I was all over the place, looking at the 340, M3, C450, Macan, Model S. I even ordered, and subsequently cancelled a Jag XF. Finally, I spent yesterday climbing around, driving and ultimately buying an S6. It turned out to be a car - and a deal - that I just couldn't pass up. Specs are in my signature below. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my left foot, but my doctor has promised meds to help me overcome MT PTSD!

I pick up the S6 in a couple days and will post pics next weekend, but I have a few initial questions in preparation for my pick-up. I'm sure my new S6 brethren can help . . .
  1. I know that most drivers end up driving in auto mode, but I want to make a real effort to drive with the paddles. Is there any way to display the current gear more prominently than the smallish display at the bottom of the instrument cluster? In the main instrument cluster display? In the HUD?
  2. Is start/stop disabled in Dynamic mode, or can it be disabled permanently?
  3. I was disappointed that the speed limit does not display in the HUD. I only saw it on the center display nav map. Can it be displayed anywhere else more prominently and permanently?
  4. I'll probably hard-wire an Escort windshield-mount radar detector. Is there any coating on the windshield that prevents reception (or toll-transponder use)?
  5. I want to install a powered ProClip phone mount. Is there a 12-volt socket under the dash (like BMWs) or do I need to run the power cord all the way back to the center armrest 12-volt socket?
Thanks for your help. I look forward to my new forum!

1.) There is a simple VAGCOM change that will make the gear display the gear.

C7 A6/A7 & S6/S& VAG COM list and help

________________________________________
Enable Automatic Gear selection shown in DIS
[02 – Auto Trans] [Adaptation – 10]
Select “Single Gear Display” from top channel drop down menu
Select “D on/S on” from New value drop down menu
________________________________________

2.) There is a switch on the left center of the dash to turn off start/stop (lights ups when the start/stop is off) on the left center of the dash).

On HUD.....

If you enable the lap timer display, using vagcom, you will see the current gear in the HUD (along with speed and oil temperature), but when the lap timer is displayed you will not see any navigation info in the DIS or HUD.

Thanks m444 and Mad. From your posts, the links that m444 provided and a little more homework, I'm getting there.

I see the vagcom mod for the lap timer and HUD display of the current gear. I'm not sure that's a great solution, but it looks like the only one. It doesn't look like there's a vagcom solution for a HUD speed limit display for US cars. There's not an under dash 12-volt plug, nor is there any windshield coating to worry about. The only question that I still have is about start/stop. If you turn it off via the dash switch, does it stay off (like BMWs), or do you need to turn it off again each time you start the car?

The start/stop switch stays off on the 2016 S6/7. The A6/7 the switch must be toggled every time get in car.

Welcome to the club and congrats on the purchase!

Let us know how you like the car after you've driven it a bit...

I have only had my S6 since last Saturday (off the lot), but every day I llike it more. Still getting used to it and all the settings. I probably would have ordered it differently, but this a set of options I can live with.

2016 S6
S6 Sport Package
Driver Assistance Plus Package
Black Optic Package
Carbon Atlas Inlays
LED Headlights
Bose Premium Surround Sound System w/AudioPilot
Black Cloth Headliner
Audi First Aid Kit

Gratz! What would have you ordered differently? Just curious. This car is amazing, I love it more and more as the days go on.
