Considering everything else looks the same and for saftey factors I would guess it has a shift lock button. Probably that top badge depresses.

Here are two DIY threads about it although for an S4 and S5. It looks like the similar characteristics will apply, going from side locking to front locking.

This is the **** on eBay. Says it will work with A6 type 4F. Will that be compatible with our cars?

Audi s Tronic Gear Gnob Shift **** Handle RS6 Look for A3 A4 A5 A6 Genuine | eBay
Thanks for the reasearch, guys. The DIYs and the find on eBay were exactly what I was looking for. I like the ****, I'm just not sure I want to melt and twist the plastic shift release shaft inside the gear shift lever 90 degrees. Over time and multiple shift cycles I can see it failing.

The RS shift **** also matches the perforated leather steering wheel in the RS6, where there is no perforated leather in the S6.
