Default S6 - dealer wants a 10% deposit

Was about to order a 2016 S6 and ended up not doing it because the dealer wanted a non-refundable 10% deposit. Just wondering if this is par for the course because that's a lot of money for a deposit and I've never had to pay more than a $1000 (refundable).

Ridiculous. This isn't a Bugatti. I put $2k down, and that was actually my offer as it pretty much my standard amount for all cars. I could have gotten away with $1k.

Agree. That's reduculous. I put a 2k deposit down. Find another dealer if they insist on 10%

I gave $1000 on my order. Laugh at them and walk out.

I deposited $1,000. 10% is completely ridiculous and atrocious. Find another dealer and tell the original one to suck your nuts.

Thats crazy, I was not required to put any deposit down. My sales guy even said I could change my mind at anytime, because he can sell the car easily.

I'm not defending the dealer by any means and the $1k down refundable deposit is about right/normal for most dealers, but is sounds as if the dealership you are dealing with truly does not want to order one for you. Is it a very small dealership or in a location where they do not sell many high end cars? They could be fearful that you will try to get out of the deal and they may be stuck with an $80k+ car they cannot sell or have to take a loss on. I have to assume there is more than one dealership that has never sold an R8 and would demand a high deposit to order one if someone with means wished to do so at their dealership.

Your second sentence is key. Except in tiny markets, an S6 shouldn't be a hard sale. So it would depend on how the car was ordered. Absent any unusual option selections, I believe that a couple K deposit should be the max. The good news is that there are lots of Audi dealerships.

This dealership is very high volume, many R8's on the lot too. I was told their allocation was only for 2-3 S6's. Audi must really not want to make many, at least initially.

No way anything over $1K or $2K, and only on a refundable basis. Many dealers won't even ask for a deposit if you're a regular customer. Any dealer has the ability to either sell a cancelled order, or trade it with another dealer---the latter is done all the time on limited allocation vehicles. As a matter of fact, my A8 order slot was obtained from another dealer's allocation that my dealer traded for and changed to my spec.
