Default what's the deal with the turbos??

so some old lady drove me off the road yesterday and i slammed into an embankment - really just bottomed out pretty hard, tore the front bumper/grill unit off, no other body damage, radiator ruined and dumped all the coolant, but tow truck driver was able to drive it onto the flatbed, so i hope that's a good sign, but problem is, i'm in an '08 S6 and bluebook is probably what, $10-12k at most, so waiting on insurance, hopefully they'll fix it and not declare it a total loss......so long story short, if it is a loss i was looking to get into a C7 S6 but when i see three different posts on this forum regarding blown turbos, now i'm totally rethinking a replacement - i spent a fortune replacing the turbos on my old 2.7T, so i don't want to go through that again, so what's the story? plus, in april i just dumped about $9k into the car for maintenance/upgrades, so i'll be really pissed if it is a loss.....funny thing was, the day before the accident i just had my airbags replaced because of that recall, but they didn't go off - probably because there really wasn't any bumper impact, but i did bend over a stop sign....oh well, anyway, let me know what you think, or if a certain model year is thought to be more reliable, etc.

yikes.....sounds like an extended warranty might be in order if i decide to get one, i assume you have to pull the engine to replace the turbos, as you had to in the 2.7?

No, look at oil separator DIY, once down to that level turbo is easy to replace.

The labor for the oil seperator change seems to be about 4-8 hours, depending on the shop's experience. The new turbos come with new exhaust manifolds. Many people with S6/S7 are upgrading the coolling for the Heat exchanger, replacing the the oil seperator and adding aftermarket downpipes at the same time. A number of people have gone to the RS7 turbos, with a stage 3 ECU tune.

Ebay turbo discussion here

Ebay turbos $4400 a pair here

You can just get the CHRA core replaced for less here: 4.0TFSI RS7 CHRA Turbo Upgrade

"
Factory size and hybrid RS6 RS7 S8 Turbo core upgrade to take your S6 S7 A8 to stage 3 power or simply replace your blown RS6 RS7 S8 chra's. For more power than RS7 OEM turbos, you need to look at the ball bearing upgrade solution listed here http://sillyrabbitmotorsport.com/tur...-turbo-upgrade. Included in the price is domestic overnight shipping to expedite the core exchange. "

I am looking to upgrade my B7 a4 with a newer S6. Has this turbo issue been fixed on the 2017 and 2018 models? Was this just do to the filter on the oil line going to the turbos getting clogged and preventing lubrication to the turbos?

Thanks

OP, here is the latest TSB regarding the issues dated May 14, 2018 listing the S6's specifically. It does not appear all 2017's or any 2018's are affected or included. VIN ranges below for 2017's. There is a TSB for Nov 28, 2018, but does not list any new S6 versions (or 2018 models for that matter).
