Replacing stock air filter w/ K&N filter?
I decided to replace my stock engine air filter with a K&N filter (model E-1983), which I have had on previous cars.
It took me a few minutes to figure out how to open up the air box and get at the filter.
It turned out to be pretty easy:
Interestingly, there are lots of YouTube videos on how to replace the cabin air filter, but none I could find on the engine air filter.
Here's what I found in the air box when I got the filter out ... lots of leaves and a Ricola wrapper!

It turned out to be pretty easy:
- Remove engine shield for ease of access
- Loosen the hose clamps connecting bellows to the air box outlet
- Pry bellows back off the air box outlet
- Rotate air box outlet clockwise (but actually to left when you are standing above it from the front passenger side)
- Pull out filter element
- Vacuum out filter box (see picture of what I found)
- Insert new filter element, mounting on small (1.5") diameter tube at bottom of air box
- Press air box outlet into filter opening, then fit into airbox opening, and rotate counterclockwise to lock in place
- Replace bellows and tighten hose clamps
