Frozen MMI?

Last night it was brutally cold in the Chicago area. The A6 was parked outside for about 3 hours in sub zero weather while I was in a bar.
When I went to turn the ignition, a loud feedback type sound (kind of like when someone plugs an electric guitar into an amp) started blaring through all speakers. I immediately turned off the car and pulled the key. I re-started the car and all I got was loud static through the speakers. I turned it off and on again and all I had was dead silence. I had full functionality on the screen, but couldn't get any sound out at all (CD, Radio, Sat, Nav, Voice).
The car sat overnight in a semi-warm garage and this morning everything worked fine. Is it possible that something froze in the system? Has anyone ever experienced something like this?

Exact same thing happened to me Sunday morning.
My car normally is in a heated garage, but sat out Saturday night. Car started right up, with an ungodly intermittent static mixed in with some sort of audio coming through the speakers. Started car again, turned the volume **** way down, and the noise eventually stopped. Like you, I then had no sound from any source, even when I turned the volume **** back up.
I also noticed that the screen display looked somewhat dim and washed out. As I drove the car, the screen gradually brightened, and when I re-started the car after it had warmed up, everything was OK.
I concur that this is due to the extreme cold (my temp. sensor read -2 F). I'm not clear, though, why the ampifier or audio control circuits seemed more sensitive than the other electronics. All in all I was sort of surprised as I know Audi and most manufacturers do winter testing in some pretty extreme conditions.

Me too..
I'm in the Chicago burbs and have had similar issue. When I turn my car on the last few days I hear a loud pop from the speakers but don't get the static problem. I'm sure that's coming next.

I reported the exact same thing in December!
Right when I was showing off the car to guests it let me down. It was embarassing! I got nothing but loud blaring static. How impressive! I was parked outside in downtown Portland, Oregon; it was very cold that day.
Once I warmed up the car, it was fine and has never returned to that condition. I've never pursued why.

HAppened 3 times to me (15 degrees or below) New Jersey located
The interesting thing I noticed is when the static feed back is occurring, the Surround Sound options under the DSP BOSE menu disappears. I sort of understand the amplifiers cutting out at extreme cold, but the menu option for the surround sound? This problem seems to start whenever the temperature falls below 15 degrees F. All three times the issue went away after 20 MINUTES of driving, parking the car, shut off the car, remove key and wait one minute. Trust me I tried in 5 min intervals every time, and perhaps the 20 min warms up the trunk enough. Should we try to insulate the electronics in the trunk. Also I noticed my brake warning light comes on but brake fluid is at normal level.

MOST in the A6 is a fiber LOOP which travels through your trunk. I'm in Boston and...
the car was outside all day yesterday. Had no issue, but the temp barely nudged under 15F.
