Cargo Cover Rattles like a 1957 Chevy - Pics with Fix
My cargo cover was rattling like a 1957 Chevy. It was driving me nuts! Thanks to a few members that described what they did, I fixed the issue. Below are the pictures of what I did. My Q5 has no more rattles.
Cost is about $6
Supplies Needed:
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Cost is about $6
Supplies Needed:
- 3/4" sticky back velcro - 32 inches
- Scissors
- Rubbing Alcohol
Step 1
- Remove the cargo cover and clean the four pegs of the back panel (two on each side) that slide into the slots on the car.
- Wrap the 'felt' side of the velcro around each of the four pegs.
- This will make the back panel snug within the slots of the car.
- When done (and installed) it will look like the picture below:
Step 2
- Place the 'felt' side of the velcro on the three hinges between the front and back panels of the cargo cover. See picture below
Step 3
- Place strips of the 'felt' side of the velcro along the rear most slots on the car. This is where the front panel of the cargo cover rests when closed. Take some time to get the edge straight along the side. You can fold over the excess (there will be very little). On the part closest to you, run the end along the side, and then cut at an angle for a nice finish. See picture below

Mine was rattling after I had re-installed after a big trip. I found that it was not all the way forward. Once all the way forward not a peep. I might try that first.

I thought that might be the problem with mine, but I made sure it was all the way forward. It would not rattle on smooth roads, but any time I drove over any rough roads it would rattle like crazy.

Thanks for taking the time to explain the fix. Looks like I may have to get the Velcro out too. Just noticed a high frequency rattle coming from the rear for the first time today. It's the coldest day we've had in Wisconsin so far this fall. Funny thing is that it only lasted about 30 seconds and went away... brief but very annoying.
I've had other rattles too, from the passenger seat and the dash on occasion. My Q5 has thus far been the most disappointing car I have owned because of the rattles and other issues. My disappointment is more pronounced due to high expectations after 8+ years with my A3... far and away the best car I have ever owned.

It was kind of amusing seeing this fix with velcro. I am an engineer in the aerospace industry, specifically aircraft interiors, and the use of velcro "loop" is fairly common just for this purpose... to prevent two parts from rubbing together and making noise. It is not just something or shop does, but it actually gets called out in the engineering. Perhaps Audi needs to take a few cues from our industry. A customer that pays millions for an aircraft tends not to put up with squeeks and rattles.
