Default Need help finding the right C5 S6 Torque Converter

OK so I have a 02 S6 Avant. Pulled the tranny out for a rebuild and it had a torque converter code. I'm having trouble making sure I'm getting the right TC. ZF catalog says Q35 is right based on then 1058 020 029 tranny. A ton of TC overhaul sites say A6,S6, and A8 is the same and list P35 and Q35 as the same. Mine has 157 101 stamped in it and most places say theirs have 157100. I can't find a clear answer how to tell Q35 from P35. Anyone have this problem before? The tranny rebuild place sent me one stamped 157 100. Thats not right is it?

I recently had the P0741 code too I have a 2000 2.7t with the TIP transmission. I had a 156-208 converter and I purchased one off of ebay by starparts777. They have outstanding customer service. I went to the local transmission shop I've used in the past and there were 6 different converters for my A6. starparts777 on ebay found the exact converter with the P0741 fix for under 300 bucks.

I had a hard time finding the right one too, I gave the tranny model and ID code to WIT and they sold me one. it turned out to be the wrong one but I took it back and they got me the right one. theyre pretty good. when you do get one, make sure you compare it to your old one. measure dimensions of everything. also, check to make sure the TC bolt holes (the 3 bolting TC to flywheel) are the same. the only difference between the wrong one and the right one on mine were the threaded plates for those 3 TC bolts. the right one had the threaded plates underneath the outside cover of TC ( same as original) and the wrong one they sold me had the plates welded to the ouside of the TC which added about a half inch of thickness.

So I spoke to star777 and he said as long as the outside matches up and the stall speed was the same it should be good. So even tho it had 157100 instead of the 157101 on mine I put it in and so far it drives with no issue. Thanks guys!

Were you having the P0741 code? And is it gone? I almost rebuilt my transmission but it was fine except the code. I could not even tell there was something wrong with my transmission till I did the diagnostic test @ 70 mph/tapping the brakes. I changed the oil, and it did not resolve the problem. Every ZF transmission shop tried the Fear Factor and said...well, most likely there is more going on with it other than that code... you need it rebuilt. I basically told them to suck my dick, I'll find a used one and rebuilt it over the next year and save myself a grand. Ha, anyway, hope your car is running well!

Ha I did, and now it's gone, but I also had gear ratio codes and slipping and bucking. The clutches were toast as was the clutch drum. In your case you could replace the TC and put it back in. Depending on the mileage tho it's worth just rebuilding it cause it's such a bitch to take out.

I almost pulled my transmission just because it was there. I decided not to and wait till later. I could hardly tell my converter was going out. I pulled the converter after less than 40 miles after getting the P0741 code. I figure if I get another two years on the transmission, I just fix it then. Once I rebuild the transmission, I'll do either a full stage 2 or maybe swap the turbos and do a stage 3 build then She's my ED commuter and I love the car with the stage 1 APR tune. This car is amazing in the snow, drives better than my F350 in the snow! Glad all is well with your converter Mine will be up and running soon.

Years ago I had the same code. 01 2.7T A6. On a trip thru Yellowstone. Average mileage per the display went from 21.0 to 16.0 immediately. I lived in Calif., so most codes were an immediate fail on smog. Car ran fine but no converter lockup. I bit the bullet and had the tranny rebuilt (180K miles) and it's been working great ever since. I guess it depends on what else is wrong with the car. For me (now at 238K miles) it was worth it. Bad seals in the TC is the problem, but they found a few other issues in the trans during the rebuild. Average mileage is still 20-22 per the display.
