Put my A8 wheels on S8 and they make a clunky noise while turning
I had D3 A8 19"s on my 2000 A8. They had my summer tires on them and they were my favorite setup. They were a great ride with no problems.
Wheel: Audi D3 19"
Tire: 255/40-19 HANKOOK VENTUS V12 EVO K110 40R R19 TIRES
S8
Wheel: 19" 7 spoke Wheel (came on it)
Tire: Michelin 245/40-19
Over the weekend I put the D3 19"s on the 2001 S8.
They are making some clunking sound when I make a wider turn.
It sounds like maybe bearings. It definitely isn't rubbing because the sound comes from the rear as well.
I'm perplexed because the D3 19/Hankook setup was great on the A8 and I would expect D2 A8/S8 to interoperate.
I think both cars have stock spacers.
Not sure but I think the 12 spoke D3 wheels are 8.5Jx19 ET43
Not sure what the 7 spokes are.
The only differences in tires are 255 on the Hankooks vs 245 on the Michelin.
Any ideas?

Great Idea!
Thanks for the insight.
Since the balancing job is far from perfect anyway I will just take weights off one wheel and see.
These are my summer tires but my winters were ready to give out. They were going bad from sitting in one place (Since I don't drive the car). The side wall on the inside were cracking.
If I have to buy tires Big-O, is having an annual by 2 get 2 free this weekend only. Not bad timing. I usually have 2 sets (summer and winter) which has seemed unnecessary in California until the recent rain.
The one th9ing that makes me skeptical is the fact that the rear doesn't have big calipers and not sure how the rear weights would rub on brakes calipers only in really wide turn (I can see in front).
Can't hurt to try. I'll post the results. Wheels needs re-balancing anyway

Not sure what your are suggesting I do with the clamps but I found info on the wheels
Found the 7 spoke spec's
https://parts.audiusa.com/p/Audi__A4...1025AG1H7.html
They are 19x9 ET29 5x112
Confirmed the D3 19" specs:
2004 AUDI A8 D3 #9C WHEEL RIM OEM ALLOY 8.5Jx19H2 ET45 4E0601025N
Results of conversion chart on this site pic below:
From link on audipages: audipages A8/S8 Tire Size Options
255/40-19 4.0 27.0 0.18 0.39 8.5-10.0 9.0 -1 1 '04 A8 option on 8.5" rim
Comment (red) shows the 255/40-19 are approved option on the D3 19's.
So my question is should I buy new 245/40-19 for the 7 spokes or can I save the money move the Hankook 255/40 -19's from the D3's to the 7 spokes?
The 7 spokes are a 12.25mm wider wheel but the wheel offset difference from the D3's is -15mm and the Hankooks are a 10mm wider tire.
What does it all mean?
My gut feeling is that moving the Hankooks to the wider 7 spoke wheel with less offset will work.

This is crazy! Do I need spacers?
I have the 255/40-19 on the 9" wheel (7 spoke)
There is a new rubbing in turning but even worse there is a really bad understeer.
I'm 95% certain that the rubbing is the tire hitting the control arm.
It is hard to believe that a 10mm variation in tire width is causing this but the Hankooks seem to have a slightyly wider sidewall design.
Hankook Ventus V12 run wide or true to their size? Comparison to Falken 452's? - Club Lexus Forums
I'm trying to decide if I should just put spacers on.
I have never tinkered with spacers but I know many people have.
Help!

Solved! Wrong Bolts. Ball instead of Cone
This weekend I jacked up the car the front of the car so that I could freely turn the front wheels. They were able to turn in both directions on both sides with no friction on any part of the car.
Then I had the idea that I would put the OEM spare on and take it for a drive around the block to see what happened.
As soon as I got the first bolt off to change the wheel, I knew what the problem was.
I ran over to my box of bolts and lo and behold the tire shop had used the ball bolts and not the cone bolts.
Changed all 20 ball seat bolts to cone seat and the car is now handling like new.
Almost forgot how amazing the S8 handling is when it works properly.
