Skinny spare on Q7/'09
Hi,
I have a Q7 3.6 2009 - Do a fair bit up in the mountains around here (Oman) and was wondering:
a) For off-roading & general use, i.e. both loose stone & paved roads, what would be a good tyre... the current ones are a bit soft and smooth (really they're paved road only types).
and b) Is it possible to replace the skinny spare with a real wheel&tyre - trying to get down some of the mountain passes here on a skinny spare would be a nightmare.
Thanks
Nick

A photo from the other question I asked on this forum shows some of the flatter terrain we go through - a lot of the tracks are far worse/better and are up to about 30% incline (and twisty).
I know the Q7 is not ideal for this sort of work, but, hey, I like it... I don't take it on sand/into the desert for obvious reasons...

Ive got some mild offroad needs in the mountains too; I'm planning on getting a set of 18" touareg rims and wrapping em in 265/60R18 BF TA's for winter and spring use.. The clubtouareg forums have alot more people offroading if your looking for more discussion on tires, etc.
for the spare; hope I'm not ever in the position where I need to use that up on a mountain trail.. otherwise I'd get a roof basket and slap a full size up on the roof.

I had been looking at the same thing. I found that Continential recently started making a tire called TerrainContact. It was recently shown on the new VW Atlas Weekender edition. Looks like the perfect solution for a tire on the street and some soft roading, paired with some 18" wheels.

A full sized spare will not fit where the inflatable spare is stored under the rear deck. You have two possible solutions:
1.) Put a full sized spare in the luggage area behind the rear seat and use the tie downs to secure it in place.
2.) Do as I do. See here:

Thanks for the replies - unfortunately, the TerrainContact doesn't seem to be available here (Dubai).
Can anyone suggest a decent alternative?

Can you get BF Goodrich TA Ko2?
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...R8KO2&i1_Qty=4
They are a lil larger than spec 18s but ive found many reports they clear fine and dont make any contact.. Should drive like a tank offroad and snow while still being pretty tolerable on the highway.. I run em on my Jeep and they do great, I expect em to make the Q7 quite a bit more capable off the beaten path.
Might consider mudflaps or something though; all terrain tires tend to pickup rocks in the treads if your flying down gravel roads
