Last week, my 2005 allroad 2.7T auto suddenly gave a high-coolant temperature warning (Gauge said H). After 2 minutes, it went back to completely cold (C) and the warning disappeared. The normal behavior is after a few minutes of driving, it stays in 12 O'Clock position.
This repeated for a few days. Yesterday, the gauge never came back to C and it is staying at H. I don't see any drivability problem or any other issues. My engine temperature is normal.
Any suggestions on what may be wrong? Some sensor issue? If so, what is it and where can i find it? Any help is appreciated

prolly a sensor going out; a vagcom scan should reveal more

Guess: Clean the contacts in the electrical connecto on the sensor

not quite what he's lookin for

there are 2 coolant sensors i believe
one is on the lower rad hose, passenger side of engine
and i think the other is the back of the engine, in the middle somewhere

Try changing the Temperature sender/sensor.
The part is 5-15 dollars in the US at Rock Auto
My local Audi dealership tried to sell me a new timing belt and cam sensors and valve cover when the car would not start this december. Wanted $6500
I changed the MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow Sensor) $69 and the Green 4 pin temperature sensor $6 myself and problem solved and car starts perfectly and runs like new.
Might be worth a try. The temperature senders fail regularly and will cause all sorts of intermittent issues.
It was about a 3 hour job for a novice like me.
