Default Rear Bilstein upgrade on 98 A6 Wagon (C4 chassis)

Need a bit of quick help here. I've been fighting a Bilstein rear shock upgrade all night. Seems simple, but for the life of me I can't get the shock/strut assembly collapsed enough to install the lower mounting bolt. The old ones came out fine, they were obviously trashed. The perches and the springs went back in the car fine (both sides), but I have about 2" of shock to compress before the mounting bolt can be installed. I've tried a floor jack, but I'm hesitant to push too far for fear of 'busting a strut'. Just seems to lift the entire back end.

The crew @ Blau swear the inserts I bought are the correct part number for this app. (PN: BE5-2593) Everything I've read says these are the correct shocks as well.

Anyway, if any of you creative types have a technique for getting these compressed and bolted in, please let me know...ASAP if not sooner!

Shouldn't be this difficult... appreciate any thoughts. Thanks

Default I've never don it but

... you do need to compress it fairly aggressively. Keep in mind that it is supporting the weight of the car to bet at nominal ride height - which is ~1000 lbs (ok, maybe 20% of 3800, which is 760 lbs...., but its a LOT).

If a heavy car hitting a pothole at speed wont break it, why would your smooth floor jack?
