2003 MK1 Rattle noise between 500-1K rpm
Hi, guys. I've started to have an issue with a noise coming from my TT and was wondering if people are familiar with it or have experienced something similar. Reading around I've seen people with similar sounding issues but none that exactly describes my problem. Basically my car makes a grating or rattling noise at lower RPM between 500-1000. The noise disappears at higher or lower RPM than that range. I've heard it could the cam tensioner or that something timing belt related could be failing.
I shot a short video of it and would appreciate any help or pointers. Thanks.

You'll need to use standard automotive troubleshooting techniques to at least isolate the noise as coming from the engine internals or accessories or exhaust system itself or body components (exhaust shields etc.).
One way to determine exhaust or not is to move the engine slightly and see if the noise continues. An engine support bar is best to use for this. For accessories, the mechanic's stethoscope is best.
Otherwise you have to get under the car and look/feel while someone varies the engine RPM's. A hoist is the safest way to accomplish this. If you don't have access to, perhaps it is best to pay someone to figure it out for you. Otherwise, Ramps or jacks AND at least four jack stands. Maybe even six or eight. Be 200% certain car is in Neutral and that it can't fall when rev'ing.
SAFETY-FIRST. Don't take any chances as this is a dangerous procedure. Again, consider taking the car to a shop instead of dynamic testing it.
SAFETY FIRST
Then again, you may be able to look at the exhaust system and shields and see something broken/loose without running the engine. You still need to practice all proper safety procedures when going under a raised car with low ground clearance.
Again; be safe.
