Default 2004 TT Roadster radio issue:

I recent bought a 2004 'base' FWD TT Roadster with the Bose 'concert' AM/FM CD player. I think that my antenna is the issue. The radio works fine within 20 miles of a radio station but doesn't work outside of that range. The stubby antenna is located on the left rear fender. Does this system have a signal amplifier? Is it in the mast? Is it in the antenna base? Or is it located in the wiring somewhere? Bentley only explains how to remove the radio or antenna from the system.

This car only has about 10 of the 'normal' problems and your forum covers most of them. Thanks for your help!

The stub is exclusively for telephone. For years I thought the stub was FM and the defroster was AM but that is not the case. If your rear window has an aftermarket metallic tint, it will totally kill AM reception and reduce FM reception. If that is not your problem, there is a static bypass capacitor that fails but in that case static should relate to RPM.

Mine is not a COUPE. The Bentley manual says that the radio antenna for the roadster has a 12" connector at each end and a section of antenna wire between them. One of the 12" sections terminates at the antenna 'base'. The 'mast' threads into the base. Is there an signal amplifier in the Roadster model?

I do not know if there is an antenna pre-amp, but doubt it. There is no need for such a device in today's radios. There have been a few (very few) reports of leaks around the convertible top corroding connectors. Possible but not likely.
