3.2 or 1.8

3.2 for me

Hey there, I went through the same decision and drove both, settling on the 3.2. Got it for 23k with only 19k miles. Had Audi cert used warranty. Love it, no problems. DSG is great and problem free. Definitely a consideration if you drive traffic. Can be a camry or racer as needed. Pretty good mileage 22-30 depending on tempo of driving. With the 3.2 most of the mods are already done by the factory. Good luck.

Pretty car, wanna trade ? :-)
The fact that you 3.2 guys are so quiet leads me to believe that your cars are pretty solid.

I can understand you concerns im in the same boat as you >>>
I have had a 2001 225 for almost 3 years now nearing 95k and i am starting to look for a new car soon.
My TT has been great so far but here are some observations.
1.8 Positives
great support group, lots of info and everything has been covered.
1.8 Negatives
Turbo is finicky at times, a lot of hoses, seals and valves that have to be in good shape to have the car run smoothly, that can also cause problems.
Guaranteed 1k Timing Belt needed, and possible clutch job, I see a lot people changing their clutch before 100k which has me kind of worried and is one reason I'm trying to get a newer TT, and that's about 2k from what I have read.
3.2 Thoughts
From what others have said, there is lack of info on here about them, but is that because they are so reliable?
DSG might be an issue? 3-4k.
No timing belt.
Less finicky than turbo, you always get what you expect.
Not stick
With that said I'm about 50/50 on which I will buy for my next car, but if I didn't already have experience as a 225 owner I would go 3.2

3.2 is a great choice for the non-modder . . .
If you're not going to chip your car, the 3.2 will deliver better performance out of the box. There's abundant torque throughout the rev range, and a sonorous exhaust note to boot. Although the 3.2 isn't considered state-of-the-art any longer (no direct injection, for instance), it's still a fine engine. There are a fair number out there in A3s and VW R32s as well, with few reported issues. The DSG is definitely an acquired taste, but if you want a 3.2 in a Mk1 TT, that's your only choice. Fuel mileage is so-so (19-21 city, near 30 on long highway trips), and upgrading the suspension can be a PITA because the car sits 10mm higher to provide sump clearance. I chose the 3.2 for the engine alone, and would do so again.

There have been similar posts here, not a lot but DSG is the minority on this board
The only way you can get a mk2 with a 6-speed is the 3.2, all of the 2.0T variants (fwd, quattro and S) are DSG only.
