Default Aftermarket airfilter

Trying to figure out if the aftermarket air filter is any good. On the OEM filter box there is a pipe that sits just over the wheel well at the back, there is cold/ outside air which travels from there through the filter and to the turbo. Looking at the aftermarket ones they seem to be pulling the air from around the engine, which is pretty warm air. Anyone had any experience with aftermarket air filters?

Are you talking about replacing the entire engine intake with something generic like K&N and not a cold air intake system? Some folks do it, however, IMO the results are more hype than fact. Think about it. If Audi could get more performance from a bone stock engine by using a different air filter system, that is definitely low hanging fruit compared to the millions they spend in engine development, and they would have done it themselves.

Id like to put the air filter down in the wheel arch. This will free up some space in the engine bay. In a Quattro there is an extra intercooler on the drivers side, but not in the version I have. i seen on one website they have duct work from the front of the bumper up to the new "K&n" filter, which gives forced air. So what I'm thinking is putting the k&n filter in an enclosure and having forced air at the front of the bumper.
