If you are going to be reliant on Audi service, or independent Audi specialists for maintenance, the answer is yes, they can indeed be expensive to maintain. As is true for all Audi cars. If your plan is to maintain it yourself parts are not as expensive as you might think, there are many online sources for genuine audi parts making them affordable.
If you plan to maintain the car yourself, you would be well advised to buy a VCDS cable for diagnostics, and a service manual, Bentley or the like as a source. Read carefully through this forum, there is a lot of good information to be had here.
Good luck to you

I agree with everything 03 AR CO mentions above.
Although for a different Audi model, read the first post in this thread: https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a8-...-read-2877219/
A few of us who spend our time on that forum put it together as we seem to get a question similar to yours once or three times a week and we did not feel like retyping the same stuff as an answer.
Virtually all applies to the MK1 TT. My son has a 2003 (220 hp, now a bit more, thanks to Unitronic).
Buy the car and enjoy it.
