Default Audi TT 2001 - steering fluid leak

Power steering fluid leak and questions.

My steering feels fine and there are no unusual sounds.

Yesterday, the dealer lnoticed it when I had it in. They said that I had a fluid leak but didn't have time to chase it. So they just filled up the reservoir and sent me away.

Today I took a good look underneath it. It is leaking fluid although the dipstick still reads full.

I had an engine replacement a couple of months ago. I am hoping that when they disconnected the pump, they didn't top it off with some other fluid.

I am fearing the worst and hoping it is not the rack.

However, if it is a leak somewhere else, it might be simple to fix. I have read that these leaks are notoriously hard to chase. Is there a more common area prone to leaks than others? Today when I took it out it idled more rapidly and loudly than I felt was usual.

What do you think? And thank you for putting your mind to this with me....

Steering rack is the usual suspect. There are two Banjo Bolts that connect the hoses to the PS Pump. If the input side is loose/sealing washer missing, you could have a slow leak. If the high pressure side has a leak, ALL fluid/mineral oil is shot out in less than 30 seconds.

I wonder if someone might recommend a great honest place to take my TT for this kind of work?

I just repaired a leak on mine. The pressure switch on the pump was leaking. Easy, cheap fix. The part was about $30.

I too feared the worst and was afraid it would be the rack.
