Default Car starts, die after a second.

Hello everyone.
Bought a 2001 audi tt quattro recently, the car had a dead battery and a non working cluster. Tried starting, but would die after a second. No key sign on the cluster, tried all 3 keys and no. Change. It did throw 2 codes
Power train data bus 01312
Steering angle sensor 0778

Would a bad cluster not let the car turn on?
Thanks for any help.

Yes, it would. Sounds like the cluster is no good. That code is that the ECU is not communicating the with cluster and has blocked the start. Unless you have the appropriate software you wont be getting another cluster to work, dealer only. You can buy a used one and have them install it and make it work.

You will likely need component protection removed from the cluster after it is repaired. Dealer only for that one. In fact, that may be the whole problem here.

Had to purchase a new cluster. Then took it to a local shop and they were able to retrieve the code.

So my cluster lights work but not the tach and speedo. When I turn key, motor starts, then 1 second later shuts off and there is a small low "beeep". If I turn key to just before turning motor on, the the gauge shows a yellow light for the KEY flashing, and the seat belt light flashes.

How much was cluster - and did dealer do the work. Someone told me if I buy a cluster and put it on, I need to get someone to fix mileage.

Mine never had the flashing key or the seat belt.
The cluster was 2k. I found a local shop that did it for me, dealer was asking 700 to install, program and set miles. Ended up paying only 260 and he set the miles for me. . Search around where you from, some shops will be able to retrieve the code for you..
Another thing, did you try turning the car on with a different key?
