on cold starts: sucking air / WHOOSHING noise for only a minute - what is it???
2001 TT base model. Is this normal???
When starting cold (overnight), there is a very loud air sucking or "WHOOSHING" noise that continues for about a minute or so until the engine revs drop. Then it instantly goes away and purrs like a kitten. Happens every morning.
Seems to be around the MAF or back side of the engine area.
Almost sounds like an open air intake. But all hoses and connections are fine.
Kinda sounds like an AC compressor starting up (without the clicks). But with the AC off this still happens. Strange.
Any ideas??? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

Don't see a reply on this. Don't know if you're still having the issue. I had a similar issue on my '01 Passat (V6 though) and it was the secondary air intake. It basically allows more air in for a larger combustion/warm up. Just bought an '04 TT so we'll see how she does when the cold hits.

Secondary air pump is defective. They cost about $400 from a dealer if you can get a discount. The car will work without it but the noise is embarrasing. You can disconnect the wiring to stop the noise.
