Does age or mileage dictate maintenance interval?
Hi,
We just purchased our first Audi, a 2003 TT roadster (base model) with 41k miles. The car has been extremely well cared for, being stored in the winter months. I have all of the previous owner's maintenance records, or at least all they gave to the dealer. There is no indication of the timing belt/tensioner/water pump being replaced. From what I've read, the 1.8L Turbo is an interference engine so I'm mildly concerned.
So, even though the car only has 41k miles on it, it is 11 years old. Should I consider changing the belt/pump/tensioner because of age or can I wait until the recommended mileage is reached?
Thanks!

You should be more than "mildly concerned"
Timing belt, water pump, tensioner and associated stuff must be replaced every 5 years or 60K miles. The owner's manual replacement recommendations are wrong and Audi was sued for it and lost. While you can peek at the TB, visual inspection is useless.
You have a time bomb that can fail at any moment and cause a $5K+ repair.

Oh boy, I was hoping it was something that I didn't have to address immediately. I think I will heed your advice and have the car serviced promptly.
This triggers a couple of other question then. First, I assume it's best to use genuine Audi parts for everything, correct? Second, is there an online site that offers genuine Audi parts at reasonable prices? My brother-in-law owns his own shop where I usually have my service done, so unless this is something an Audi dealership should do I will have him to the work and supply the parts myself.
Thanks.

JK, I can refer you to a competent mechanic in Madison, if that helps you.

Thanks for the offer, but my brother-in-law is a mechanic, and a very competent at that. He maintained my Mitsu 3000gt-vr4 before I sold it - and that this was a beast to work on. I live in Eau Claire, so Madison is too far to travel for repairs; we also have an Audi dealer in town but I like to give my business to 'family' or 'small business' whenever possible.
I just can't decide what kit to buy from whom. I've found several now: dieselgeek.com, ecstuning.com, purems.com, blauparts.com, mjmautohaus.com. I just want the best parts possible (at the best price, of course) - no china knockoff stuff.

Get the DeiselGeek kit
I think it is the only one that provides a water pump pulling tool. Everyone says it makes the DIY job much easier.
Regarding "I think Continental spells out the max age at 6 or 7 yrs unless the mileage limit is hit first." It's usually not the belt that fails. It's the tensioner and water pump.

Please correct my recap as needed:
* Continental is good belt to use for every 5-6 yrs or 60K miles
* Audi / VW specialists are cheaper way to go than dealerships for parts and labor
You guys know anyone in Atlanta, GA? I recently purchased my 2003 TT, 115K, continental belt a few months ago at 110K.
