Stock '02 1.8 225 Rdstr with 118k miles. A few days ago after relaxed driving, a rattle noise came from the engine bay when stopped at idle. No CEL or codes.

Testing it from parked position, at cold start, no noise. After 15 minutes of idle, the loud rattle noise starts. Idle is around 800 RPM. If I rev at or above 1500RPM the noise stops. When it returns to 800 RPM idle, after a few seconds the noise starts again. If I turn on A/C while at idle, the noise gets louder, and engine occasionally sounds like it wants to stall. Appears to be coming from driver side? Not sure. Video of sound is linked. Thank you for your insight.

I just fixed the video. There is the clicking of the valves, But then a louder pop or clang sound happens From the driver side, Only during idle. Any suggestions or ideas appreciated.

It sounds like a lifter tacking but it could be a number of things. If it were me i would pull the head to check the oil pump, rods and lifters are working properly. this guy seems to have a similar problem but you want know till you take a look. keep me posted

The air hose coming off your EGR valve, with the cloth material around it. is that stock on the 02 tt's?

is your Roadster a 6spd manual? if so, does the knocking sound disappear or changes when you step down on the clutch? also, use a large, long screwdriver to target where the sound is loudest: put the flat end against the engine (like the vc bolt), and put your ear to the end of the handle to listen. it sounds like your Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) kicked the bucket. similar sound to my 2001 Audi TT Roadster 225hp 6spd.
