Default Engine Replacement

My 2003 Audi with 90k miles needs a new engine. I found a 2004 turbo engine and was wondering if the 2004 engine can be compatible with a 2003 model. I'm also thinking of rebuilding the engine. Ultimately I want to make sure the car will be in good, running condition. Should I buy a new engine? Or, should I have the engine rebuilt? A mechanic gave me similar prices for both except for a $20 dollar difference.

Why does it need a rebuild/new engine? If you had a deal like Ballykid's saga ( https://www.audiworld.com/forums/tt-...story-2901563/ ) Then you need a new block as a minimum. His head was technically ok. If your timing belt snapped, you should just need a rebuilt head ( new valves & lifters) and can get from a dealer with exchange for a fair price.

If you're engine is consuming a lot of oil, you may just need new piston rings and valve stem seals.

Best bet for an engine is an automotive recycler. I'd try Shokan first.

Heck, Ballykid might sell you his old head which is in good shape. Engine code: BEA

I replaced the engine in my 2001 225 three years ago when it dropped a valve and holed a piston at a track event. I found a 63000 mile 2002 engine at LKQ recyclers. They are nationwide I believe. You'll need the same engine series (code stamped on the front corner of the head.) Mine was an AMU. I believe yours will be BEA (and the 2004 if both are 225hp)

Good luck finding one. It was not cheap. Engine cost was $3700. Install cost about $2000. I wouldn't have done it except I was attached to the car and it had quite a few suspension and brake mods. It has served pretty well for the three years since.

Shokan had a short block with 80,000 miles for $800 and a long block for $1600.00 with 60,000 miles. BEA engine code. Add a couple hundred buck for gaskets and new stretch bolts and as long as you have the tools and time, you can do it yourself. Or, pay someone to do the work with their tool use built in the pricing.
