Front suspension noise - I can't find it
2001 TT turbo - 170k miles
It had a lot of suspension noise. I replaced:
dogbone mount
right motor mount
4 shocks/struts
4 axles
front ball joints
control arm bushings (the rear bushings that have the bolt going up vertically)
outer tie rod ends
some other stuff
Then I still had a "clunk" noise. I just left it for a couple of months, because I couldn't replicate it in the driveway. Now the noise is really bad, but I still can't make anything wiggle in the driveway. It sounds like the left front wheel is going to fall off when I pull out of a parking space, or worse, a big clunk when stopping in traffic.
Edit: at rest steering is smooth as glass from stop-left to stop-right.
Any ideas, and how to diagnose?
Thanks in advance guys.
Bill

There's a post somewhere on the boards about a steering rack mounting bolt being loose under the battery tray area. Might be a place to look anyway...
There's the classic cracked-plastic sway bar bushing thing too, but that's more when you hit a bump. This doesn't sound like that.
