What would be a good Asian alternative to the TT? My Japan-built 1992 Stealth has held up remarkably well for 18 winters in snow and salt. I would love to stay in an AWD sport coupe. The GT-R is way out of my price range.

My bad. The dealer with which I was working had two new TT Quattro coupes in stock -- a 3.2 DSG, and a 3.2 6MT. I didn't even pay attention that they were 2009. That will really limit used car searches if there were only 2 years of 3.2L Mk2s.

Since the I4 in the tts is touted as being more powerful than the 3.2, I don't think it is a big loss.
Plus with the dustbuster style grill, they can keep it. I just can't get past the ugly *** grill and how pudgy it got since the mk1
My vote for a new sports car to replace my 01 TTR is the Lotus - British Style, Toyota motor - best combo yet! - http://www.edmunds.com/lotus/exige/2009/index.html

The 2010s don't come with a manual tranny....only DSG. Also, they don't sell the 3.2L, only the 4cyl turbo in the 2010s (at least in the USA).
I actually like the interior of the MK2....more substantial...plush with more of a bucket seat feel and more comfortable. The one thing stunning about the MK2 vs. the MK1 is that although the MK2 is a fast car (be it the 3.2L or the 4cyl turbo), you really can't feel the speed compared to when driving the MK1. With the MK1, you feel the road more.
As I've owned 3 TTs (two MK1s and one MK2) and an A4, my feeling is that the MK2 is a bit like the MK1 and a bit like the A4. I assume I'll get much better drives in the snow with the MK2 than I did with my MK1s (the A4was a tank in the snow....amazing traction).

Looking at the car, to me it is a closer cousin to an A4 than to the mk1 TT. Again not a bad thing. Just not my cup of tea.

I would not say that the MK2 is far superior to the MK1 in every regard. BOTH are great cars but I see them as somewhat different cars....to me,the biggest similarity is that both are named TT....and then the differences pop up big time. I see the MK2 as what would happen if you mated an MK1 TT with an Audi A5...

mk1 tt purchase
[QUOTE=geordon;23879417]I am looking at several similarly equipped privately owned MK1 quattros. Assuming all are in relatively good condition, which would be the most bang for my buck without incurring excessive maintenance concerns:
2005 45,000mi $19K
2004 97,000mi $13K
2001 95,000mi $9K (has new timing belt)
I have felt the 2001 are the most reliable models. most consumer magazines have supported this.. if you could find a low mileage model i would go in that direction. i have owned 2 that have been very trouble free. although ugly a subaru wrx is also an excellent car
