Default Joystick Shifter

Help please,

This past Friday I was pulling away from a stop sign and the TT resisted going into second. Back off and tried again and when I did there was nothing there. Tried 1st and it was the same, nothing. When the shifter is in the normal position (left side of shifter box) it is like a really worn joystick: absolute slop with no resistance. 3rd, 4th, and reverse work fine. Linkage on top of the trans seems to be moving fine, so the shifter cables don't appear to be broken.

My question is: Is the shift mechanism so precise on these 5 speeds that a crapped out bushing at the shifter could cause it to have nothing in 1st and 2nd or am I looking at the internal gear selector. Also is the internal gear selector, that you access under the linkage pivot point repairable without taking out the trans.

There were no warnings or indications there was any problem at all. Out of the blue. When in 3rd, 4th, or reverse the is no noise at all and everything seems to function normally. No noise when trying to get into 1st or 2nd either.

Any ideas would be welcome. I live roughly 200 miles from the nearest dealer, with no local expertise so I usually do my own work, but trannies are beyond my level of expertise without some guidance.

Thanks

if the stick under the the **** looks ok, and its not broken,
like this one:
Audi TT MKI Quattro 225HP Drivetrain Shifter - 8N0711112B - Gear Shift Lever - ES#454507
then the problem might be inside the transmission.
