Default Mechanic can't remove abs module! help?

Hi guys. My car is a 2001 tt 1.8 225 convertible quattro. My mechanic had my car in and on the lift for a variety of repairs, but most crucial was the removal of my ABS module so I could send it in to be rebuilt. He was unable to remove just the module because he said it would not slide out and under and/or wouldn't clear the pump and brake lines. I'm going to go talk to him today but I thought removing the torx bolts would allow that thing to come out. I don't really want to have to bleed brake lines etc.

Does anyone have any pointers for success in getting just the abs module out? Is there a good write up with pictures for this DIY? Yes I've looked an only found A4 and Passat.

Please help and thanks!
