Tranny Grind in Second & Other Tranny Problems
2000 FWD 180 TT 126k miles
So I was driving from school today and I left a stop sign out of the parking lot a bit quickly being at around 4000 RPMs in 1st. I then went to shift in second and the **** itself shook and threw itself into neutral. In which I tried to engage it in second again and it worked. 3rd and 4th work fine, 5th remains untested.
I test drove it again a few minutes ago and I replicated the issue. I listened in second and it made a grinding sound as if there was something hanging out from under the car coming from under the ****. Gear again didn't engage and I had to put it in neutral and back into second to get it to work. It also make a clunk sound when it manage to engage.
As for the final issue I experienced, I was test driving and wanted to downshift into 1st to turn into an ally to my house. I was in second gear. I held the clutch and when I tried to shift into first it felt as if there was a wall blocking me from doing so. I made the turn in second anyway and stopped the car, then shifted into 1st. It worked then without a problem and engaged.
What does this sound like to you guys and is there any other testing that I should do to help you guys diagnose the issue. Possible master or slave cylinder? Clutch? Gearbox? Any idea guys?

lots of possibilities for sure, clutch comes to mind first. your tranny prolly 02J same as my traded 01 jetta 5 spd had syncro issues. prolly not a fix but Redline MT-90 extended mine for a while until a rebuild was needed. find a good independent shop unless you can do it, a dealer will charge twice as much as they have lots of overhead + want big profits

It's not really a rebuild, you don't have to mess with the synchros or anything like that. You're just taking out all the gearsets and putting the new forks in. I'm in the process of putting new forks into a 6 speed- I've never been inside a transmission before, but once it's open it's relatively easy to see how everything works.
grinding is usually a sign of bad synchros, but not being able to push into a gear can be a shift fork issue. I'm not sure if bad shift forks can cause grinding.
ECS actually sells the steel shift forks for a decent price, but they're listed as R32 parts.

APTuning in Lebanon, Pa did my tranny at about 175,000 i ripped the teeth off 5th gear, they replaced it + some syncros. my tranny was the poor shifting soft syncro O2J prolly used in audi's as well as my 01 jetta. dealers won't open a tranny as i learned, they just replace it. if your car is worth it a rebuilt replacement may be better
