Here's' a few good examples. They "tie" the steering rods together, anchor them at ea. end...
of the car.

It's typically the ball joint in the tie rod that wears out and causes play in the steering. Unless.
you're a rally driver, like I was, who hit the scenery at times and bend the tie rod, causing "unusual" steering geometry.
