Default What does the T mean after 1.8 in "2001 Audi TT 1.8T Vehicle"?

2000 - 2001 Audi TT 1.8T Vehicles

What does the T in 1.8T stand for? I know I have a 1.8 Liter, and so I'm used to seeing 2001 Audi TT 1.8L, but not 1.8T. Does the T stand for Turbo? If so, why do they use T instead of L? Don't all TT's have Turbos??

Sorry if this question is stupid!

Default All the 4-cyl TTs are turbocharged, yes. The engine that's in them is called the 1.8T.

The new VAG cars with turbochargers are called '2.0T's.

Don't let it make ya crazy... It's no big deal.

Default Turbo, and yes all the 1.8 engine TT's have turbos, including the 150hp.......

But the later 6 cylinder models, starting I believe in 2004, don't have the turbo, the 250hp models.

Default Yes, the T is for turbo. The name "1.8T" is actually a VW/Audi brand.

The 1.8T motor was hugely important to VW/Audi (and Skoda, Seat) as it was used in many cars throughout the world. I'm not sure it's a registered trademark, but the use of the "T" to denote that it was turbo was significant. Thus, it departs from the ususal designation of displacement.

Default I'm still amazed at how small these engines are.

The power that can be coaxed from such a small displacement mill is astonishing.

Default It should be 1.8TT, because...

of course, we have Twin Turbos.
