Default yet another key fob question

I have a 2001 225 roadster and have been trying to get the keyfob working.

I have a single key, and a switchblade key.

I've been through every variant of insert key, push button, etc. Got so desparate, I tried the "two bucket" method suggested in another thread https://www.audiworld.com/forums/tt-.../#post24842487

Went to independent mechanic I use for all other cars and tested remote - and it's sending a signal.

Used VAGCOM to go through the adaptation, and it does not even seem to recognize the remote. Everything else in the CCU works- door locks, trunk, gas cap, etc. So is it possible that only the receiver circuit is bad? Or maybe a loose antenna? Is there a VAGCOM screen for this? The module does not report any error codes on central locking.

FWIW - Owned the car for a few months and the PO had not used the remote for a while. Said battery died and had not bothered with a replacement. Maybe the system had failed for him?

I looked at the reading a little more, and the CCM was coded to 15884, which does not appear to be a valid code for the TT, even though everything worked (other than the remote).

Changed it to 15900, hoping for improvement. No luck. Everything but the remote still works.
