Default 17 inch wheels for the 8J TTRS?

does anyone know of any 17 inch wheels that would fit the 2013 (8J) TTRS? i've looked on tire rack and the lowest they go is 18 inches, i'm guessing bolt pattern and brakes are the limiting factors. i'd like to go as small as possible as i live in michigan and the roads here frequently resemble a cluster bomb proving ground. looking to buy one square set to use with winter and summer tires.

I'm pretty sure you can go 18" but not 17". I'd be just as concerned about front end clearance if pot holes are that bad. I've scraped just pulling in and out of a drives - even knocked the cover off my '09 TT a few years back.

Drive safe!

Default Clearance does not change if you size the tires to the rims

The idea is to have the diameter of the combination of the rim and tire remains the same by using a larger sidewall tire that can better survive pot-hole impact. Bolt pattern is not an issue regarding rim size. Some folks say that 17s will not clear the front calipers but take the car to a tire/rim store to see. you don't need to mount a tire on the rim to check clearances so checking is quick and easy. I can tell you that I carry a full size spare in my trunk that uses a 16" rim to save a little space and that rim has no fitment issues on my base TT in the front or rear. I have not actually tried it, but I'd be willing to bet a 16" rim would clear a TTRS rear brake.

The first edition of the base Mk 2 TT in the US came with 17" rims bone stock. The TTRS stock rims were 19".

I had a bone stock TT and got 17" rims for my snows then. Being a frugal Yank, I am using them on my TTS, but they *just* barely clear the brakes. I am going to replace with 18" rims to have some real clearance. I haven't had any clearance issues other than just not being able to clean out the snow easily, but I cross my fingers when I go through some of the so-called roads up here in MA in the winter. My TTS came with stock 19" rims as a reference.

Here is the Wheel / Tire page out of the 2013 TT manual. 18's and 19's are all it lists for TTRS:

Good find. It's likely a caliper clearance issue on the higher performing model.

thanks for all your help everyone. i found that page in the manual and then took a look at the brakes. it's snug on the stock 19x9 rotor design wheels, speaking of which i hear they're pretty heavy. anyway, tirerack says the 18x8 OZ Allegrita HLT et35 (18.4 pounds) wheels will fit, and i'm going to wrap them in 245/40/R18 MSSs for the summer and MxI 225/45/R18 for the winter. then i'm going to paint them a satin finish black =).

I'd like to see pics after you paint. I'm wanting to do something similar, but I don't have a plan yet...
