The air vents are the weakest and can't hold most phone mounts correctly, are my air vents defective? or do you guys recommend a different approach to hold your phone?

Whatever you do, stay away from vent clip mounts in (all) Audis. Audi vents are extremely fragile & very expensive to replace.
I've used various models of these in almost all my cars since 1998. Most of them don't require any drilling.

I'm using a Kensington windshield mount:

• No problems - Never drops the phone
• keeps the dash clear of obstructions
• it was $18 well spent for me

Check out LightInTheBox - Global Online Shopping for Dresses, Home & Garden, Electronics, Wedding Apparel and do a search for "mobile phone holder". They can take up to 6 weeks for delivery, but there are a lot of options. Also, you will continue to get emails after a purchase. I bought a holder that suctions to the windshield and extends to the edge of the dash with a holder that can expand to hold a mini iPad. I had been using it on my previous car to monitor engine stats with an app and a WiFi OBDII connector.

I'm using a ProClip as shown in the link below. It works really well. Depending on how the phone is angled it may get bumped a bit on the throw to 5th gear.
