Winter Tires for a 19 inch Rim
So, I managed to keep my 19" rims from my MK2 TTS.
The tires on them are 245/35ZR19.
Can someone who knows about winter tires comment as to what would be the best size Winter Tire to put on these rims?
I will probably go for the Blizzak series. I live in the Northeast (Long Island). So, unless we get a blizzard, roads are more usually more cold than wet.
My gearhead friend (who swears by Blizzaks) says I can use either
-235/35-19
or
-225/40-19
What do you guys/gals think
Bob

For deep snow you want a narrower tire but otherwise you want a larger contact patch.
I swear by Michelin. Blizzaks are very good in snow but sleet/cold rain not so much in my experience.

Thanks Guys,
Tire Rack has Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 and Pirelli Sotozero 2 and 3 for 245/35R19.
And, Pirelli Sotozero 3 for 235/40R19.
Any thoughts as to which is better for winter performance?

Since you're going with 19" I would opt for the somewhat taller sidewall profile for just that bit better pothole resilience.
I too (SE MA) am more often in sleet and salt-melt than deep snow so you should be fine.

Bob, someone else had posted these reviews this morning, from a Canadian website:
Automobile Protection Association | 2016-2017 Winter Tire Reviews: Passenger Car, Minivan, & Compacy SUV Tires ....interesting to look thru.
You can always open your Owner's Manual and see what the recommended tire sizes are for 19" for your car. There may be more than one. You'll find this data where the tire pressures are listed.
I've gone thru lots of snow tires over the years. They've all been decent but some are better than others when the going gets tough. The Michelin X ice Xi3 might be a good choice for your locale. I've got a set of them for my A4. They don't do well in deeper snow, but they sure are nice/quiet 99% of the time, Bob. You'd hardly know you were driving on a snow tire.

I had Michelin X-ice on my last car (it was also AWD) and for your weather, I think they would be great. I'm going with Blizzaks this time but I am doing that for optimal snow performance. (in Canada)
