Default 18256 - Please check DTC Memory of Engine Controller

Does anyone have any leads on this specific code? My abs and esp light are intermittently coming on. This started to happen about a week after I changed out my clutch. I also noticed a couple of times where I'd be sitting at a stop with my foot on the brake pedal and the brake pedal would suddenly get soft and sink a bit. This only happened a few times and it would fix itself as soon as I took my foot off the pedal. Any advice is appreciated.

The DTC in your ABS:

18256 - Please check DTC Memory of Engine Controller
P1848 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
simply indicates that the ABS control module is aware that the engine control module is unhappy and that you should address the problems with the engine first.

ABS and ESP both use wheel speed sensors. If I would need to fix and troubleshoot this myself I would start with these sensors. It takes just one bad connection and it is enough to cause a problem.

First thing to do is to check all sensors are correctly in place. I had a car long time ago that gave me the ABS light and the problem was that one of the sensors was not correctly aligned to the wheel that it reads. The bracket was bent and I assume a small rock or something had wedged between sensor and the wheel.

Another simple thing to do is to unconnect and reconnect all sensors several times and make sure there is good connection in harnesses. Sometimes small amount of corrosion can cause flaky connection.

If above does not fix the issue I would buy a sensor and replace car's sensors one at the time and see if this would reveal a bad sensor.

I'm assuming a sensor is not really expensive and that it is easy to change for a hands-on home mechanic.

If the sensor swapping does not fix it then you would be left with a spare sensor and cost of it and it could take an Audi dealer to fix the issue.

For ABS module knowing something about engine feeling bad I would think that engine might be feeling bad because the ESP needs wheel speed input and engine power-down cannot work during slippery conditions if wheel speed data is not available. Engine should have nothing to do with ABS brakes, i.e. if engine has issue with ESP it should not light up the ABS warning.

If ABS has a problem it takes also ESP out but if ESP alone has a problem not related to brakes it should not take ABS out. Both of them going out at the same time for me points to direction of ABS problem andt this is why I would check those wheel speed sensors first.

Im getting this too now after replacing the ESP module. The module it selft says it needs to be coded and the steering sensor coded/adjusted too. The module seems to be out of an Allroad and m putting it into an A6. Is it possible to code the module with the VAGCOM?

Hi. I think I may have similar issue, but before tearing out the ABS module to get it repaired, I thought I'd check the wheel speed sensors first based on your post. I'm a newb, so not exactly sure where' they're located? Do I pull the wheels off and just look for a connector? Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

02 Audi A4 Quattro

Thanks, Mike

Before you do anything you may want to post a complete scan from the vehicle in question. Based on what you wrote checking the wheel speed sensors sounds fishy to me...

Also the explanation that the ECU uses the ABS wheel speed sensors is NOT correct. The reason why this 18256 code is stored is because the ABS is using ECU (Engine) data for some functions like ASR and ESP.

Hi, I don't have a fancy scanner, just one of the cheap ones that gives code # and that's about it. If I keep the vehicle, I'll invest in the more sophisticated equipment. I removed and cleaned the front wheel speed sensors, they seemed pretty dirty. Didn't have time to do the rears. Still have same fault codes. Got the new brake light switch today and installed it, brake lights now work, but still ABS light on and Brake Light flashing and beeping and ESP light on. These are intermittent. Not sure if it is remotely related, but engine seems to run rough in the morning - just replaced the MAF sensor and a vacuum hose that was split, so runs much better and okay when warm.

Anyway, back to ABS issue - still have fault code 00526 and 18256 when scanning ABS section. Engine section scan errors still are 18057 and 17700.

Am I looking at sending my ABS module out for repair? I figured that's my next step - found it's less expensive at http://www.cheapabs.com/ than modulemaster.com

Figured if that doesn't work, I'll replace all the wheel speed sensors and if that doesn't work, I'll punt and take it to the dealer (ugh...)

Thanks, Mike

This is the VAG-COM forum, not the Cheap Generic Scan Tool Forum.

Figured if I ever get this POS Audi running and decide to actually keep it, I'll invest into VAG-COM, but for now, just wanna limp it back to life so I can sell the money pit - gonna be out of the country for six months and don't have time to deal with it.
