Default A8 2004 Phone Activation

After many months and visits to the dealer, I finally got the bluetooth to connect to my phone. I got the proper cradle, the BTUM powers up and my blackberry pairs with the BTUM. All is great, right? No, all is not great.

I still get the message on my MMI "The telephone is not activated", please visit your Audi Dealer.

During the process of getting all of this to work, my dealer replaced the Telematics unit and my cradle to get it to work as far as I have it now. But they don't seem to understand that I am trying to get my phone to work though the MMI, mic, and speakers.

Someone on another board told me that I need the car programed through VAG-COM, and them pointed me to the ross-tech site. But I have no idea how that works or what to do next. If I new what to do, I would take my car to another dealer to get it fixed. As a matter of fact, if someone could point me to a dealer in the Balt/Wash area, I would be most happy.

I had purchased the V60 compatible phone cradle 8E1 862 407 B from the Audi Dealer and then the BMW Upgrade Module (BTUM) from a BMW dealership. I put this items in my car and nothing worked. I took my car back to the dealership and they found that the telematics unit was not communicating with the cradle so they replaced the telematics unit. In the meantime they had replaced my "B" cradle with an "A" cradle and I finally got another "B" cradle from them. When I put the correct cradle in the car, the BTUM powered up and connected with my blackberry. However, I still get the error message "Telephone is not activated".

When I received my car back from the dealer, the guy from the service department told me that even if I had a V60 in the cradle, the car would only power up the phone, I couldn't use it through the MMI. That is, as far as he knew. My question is, why would there be a phone cradle in the car if it couldn't integrate with MMI?

Default It's very hard to give you detailed instructions just based on what you wrote...

...but I agree that this is most likely a question of incorrect settings. There are multiple things which would correlate here and may need to be tweaked.

For starters it would be nice to see a complete diagnostic protocol from the car and since you ask in the VAG-COM forum, yes our product would make you able to provide that information and make the necessary changes (assuming the hardware you have is compatible and properly fitted).

I looks like I would need to buy the HW/SW to diagnose the problem myself. I am a bit weary of buying it for this one problem. (besides being scared to death of breaking something) Would there be other benefits of getting the software?

Default Besides diagnosing you will be able to enable a couple of nice features and disable some others...

...like enabling comfort via remote (opening/closing windows with the remote control) or disabling the seatbelt warning for those who don't like it.

You can't really brake something as long as you do as advised and have read the manual. Additionally most if not all changes you make are reversible.

As said before we could also go the way and do this through your dealer but that would require the one or other trip to them and of course them being interested and willing to solve this. While you may easily end up paying a similar amount of what VAG-COM would cost just for the dealer doing /trying it.

Ok. I will looking to getting your kit after I figure out how to update my MMI software from version 0600 to 2120 to whatever the latest version is.

Default The MMI update is being done by putting an update cd into the in-car cd changer but...

...updating yourself can be a tough task since those updates are not always as smooth as they should and if you go from your version to the latest version (North America = 4140, Rest of World = 4220) you would need a VAG-COM to make things work correctly again after updating.

I have been asking on the boards and can't get the US part numbers. My car is close to its 55K service and I want to order the CD's to give to the dealership to do the update.

Where is the connector for a 2004 A8L? I looked under the steering wheel and did not see it. Do I have to take a panel off?

Found it! I was thinking that it would be further down.
