Default Audi A4/RS4 Bi Xenon to Bi Xenon with AFS retrofit

First off, hello everyone this is my first time posting on this forum.

I have been busy retrofitting my AFS headlights into my RS4 so far it has gone quite well, I managed to scour information from the internet and the Elsawin current flow diagrams to get a pin out of the 26 pin connector for the old headlight control module (8P0 907 357)and the new replacement module(4F0 907 357E).

After AFAIK correctly modifying the T26 connector, I am now in a situation where I have comms to the lights, they do the power on test ie UP, Down, Outer limits, Inner Limits and using VCDS I can manually push them Up down etc etc.

However I have a fault

01539 - Headlights Not Adjusted
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation - MIL ON
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 11100101
Fault Priority: 2
Fault Frequency: 1
Reset counter: 40
Time Indication: 0

I have checked the internet, and attempted to do a basic setup of the lights, which resulted in an error.
I have then tried to interrogate my level sensors but im not really sure what im looking for, which has brought me here.

Also, is there anything else other than the head lights themselves connected to the interior wiring harness Can Bus ?

I only ask, as the old module was connected to the dash panel can bus only, but the new module is connected to both the Dash panel can bus and the interior wiring harness can bus.

In my current wiring setup it has working direct comms with both headlights via this link.

Default How to do it ;)

There are plenty of threads on the internet showing how to retrofit bixenons or even bixenons with AFS, to an A4 B7 with Halogens (usually with the help of loom adapters from kufatec) however there is very little information on how to convert BiXenons to BiXenons with AFS. I have successfully managed to do this conversion so I am making this post as a guide.

First off big thanks to the A6 wiki, which actually had most of the information I needed but I did not believe it, as I was thinking how could Audi change so much of the system just to add cornering function.

A6 Wiki here http://a6-wiki.de/index.php/Nachr%C3%BCsten

Big thanks to Google as I use chrome browser which auto translated the A6 wiki into English for me. I would have gotten nowhere if that language barrier had not been removed.

Big thanks to "Ghosting" a member of a German forum where they talk about Motors as he also had useful information that helped this happen.

Finally a BIG thanks to Dana at ross tech who spotted some coding of a module that I had missed.

You will need
A matching pair of cornering headlights, in the UK you can purchase them new (and cheap) from the link below this paragraph, but I dont think the new ones come with any control ballast/ignitor or bulbs

http://www.allpartssouthwest.com/aca...k5_06_06_.html

You will also need
a 4F0 907 357 afaik C,D,E,F headlight control computer from an audi a6 but I strongly recommend an E or F variant, the B7 A4's would have come with E as standard just because of the years they were manufactured.
F was the last variant (before the major change to the 4L0 907 357) and came with software to better cope with an issue on the headlight controller that results in 1 or both headlights flickering especially when older/ several hours of use. All Variants from B onwards can be firmware updated at the dealers to the latest firmware 4F0 910 357F

You will also need VCDS/Vagcom and the appropriate cable
as well as the necessary skills for joining wires.

Fitting the headlights is a straight swap.

Fitting the new control module requires some re-wiring of the 26 pin connector that plugs into it.

Remove your glovebox

Behind the glovebox (affixed to the roof of the cavity) is the old headlight controller 8P0 907 357, which I think is actually from an Audi A3, but don't quote me on that.

the following is the pin outs for the 2 controllers

In short you need to do the following with the wires

PS you need to remove the outer cover from the 26 pin connector there is a gate at one end that slides up you can then remove the black insert. You can use a point to undo the locking clasp for each pin in the connector (only undo the pin/s you are currently working with).

Level Sensors

PIN:
6 moves to 21
12 moves to 11
11 moves to 10
10 moves to 12
7 moves to 22

To my colour blind eyes they all look nearly the same colour, so I recommend labelling them before you start.

Power for the headlight range and cornering motors.

Remove the current wire for pin 18 and pin 20 join/solder them, they then need to be fed 12V+ from terminal 15 on the fuse block. this is the exact same place that pin 23 is currently getting it`s power from.

Data Comms to the Cornering headlights

pin
15 is Joined/Soldered to 17
new wire combination 15&17 moves to 18
19 stays where it is but pin 21 is Joined/Soldered to it

the wires currently going to pin 16 and pin 23 can be removed from the connector, they are no longer necessary.

If your 4f0 907 357 has actually come from an a6 not an a4 it will need to be logged into at address 55 and recoded as 00019 which is an a4

you will need to log into the computer at address 17 adaptation 60 and tell it you have curved lights. Thanks Dana

The cover that went over the black insert for the 26 pin connector can no longer be used, either purchase the correct one for a 4fo 907 357 from audi or plug the black connector into the pins. BE WARNED that pin 1 and 14 (also 13 and 26) are non existant on the control module YOU MUST line pin 2 (and 15) of the black connector up with the first available pair of pins on the control module.

If all goes well the only fault you should have with computer 55 (your 4f0 907 357)is

01539 - Headlights Not Adjusted
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation - MIL ON
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 11100101
Fault Priority: 2
Fault Frequency: 1
Reset counter: 40
Time Indication: 0

this essentially means your auto leveling sensors are not calibrated

you can do it yourself badly on some flat ground, the instructions are on the internet but I recommend letting somebody with the proper headlight height adjust equipment do it for you.

IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER FAULTS ON COMPUTER 55 THEY MUST BE REMEDIED FIRST OR IT WILL NOT LET YOU CALIBRATE YOUR LEVEL SENSORS AND AFS AND AUTO LEVELING WILL NOT ACTIVATE, but you will be able to make your headlights move (to test functionality) using VCDS.

I shouted that last bit because I ignored the " Right headlight power output stage" fault thinking it was unimportant as my headlights worked perfectly, I then spent ages checking and rechecking my wiring to try and find out why it would not let me calibrate my level sensors. It turns out my wiring was perfect and I just had a faulty right headlight ballast/ignitor.
