Hi Dana, I need help with one more question. The Scan shows am incorrect engine code (06652 which is for a vehicle without ESP) My Audi has ESP. When I consult Bentley, it shows my engine code (ART) as a 2.8L V6 (electrical wiring manual page ST33) and Ross Tech Wiki doesn't show any V8's.

What I have is a 2000 4.2L V8 ART with 5 speed Tiptronic auto trans, quattro with ESP, C Class (C5) Would the correct code be 06752?

Thanks

Please post up a complete Auto-Scan. I could be wrong about this, but there I don't think ESP existed in MY 2000.

Uwe, I can do that tomorrow. I changed the ECU code to reflect ESP and it made the car happy ( e.g. the ESP control lamp and the DTC 01044 disappeared) MY ABS code remained unchanged from 06397. My car might be a little wierd (I'm not the original owner) as it has an S6 badge but not the suspension and other? upgrades. This is why it would have been better if I had a previous coding printout, but this wasn't possible.

Uwe, Auto scan data is below. Everything came up clear after I changed the engine code. Since then I replaced the interior sensor module and the link connection was again lost. Vag Com was comminicating with the modules as I could hear the warning beep etc, but no data was returned to the PC screen. Once I umplugged the sensor, full communications were restored with the addition of the 18256 code (I saw the ather post about this code). The full output of the scan is: (do I have it right?)

THANKS

Yeah, there's not much we can do about a bad module choking up the diagnostic bus. The 18256 DTC in the ABS should clear now, since it's flagged "Intermittent".

I'm still a bit surprised to find an ABS/ESP in this car, but I can't argue with the scan. Are you sure this car is a model year 2000? If you don't mind check the 10th digit of the VIN, I'm sorta curious.

Thanks Uwe, The 10th digit is the letter Y Car was built 11/99. Also I wasn't clear, the interior motion sensor module I put it was a different one than I originally removed. So two modules cause the same link problem. Does this mean there's a problem in the K wire or does this expose a problem in the central locking module?

What do you think? Thanks,

Don

OK, that's definitely a MY 2000, and I'm surprised to see an ESP capable system in it, but hey..

If I understand correctly, you're having connection issues every time you install an Interior Monitoring module. I wish I had an answer for you as to what the most likely cause is, but I do not. Have you verified good power and ground at the plug for the that module? Some modules can choke the bus if either power or ground is missing.

With a defective control module as you say "choking" the k line, would the voltage
be at pin 7 and ground of the OBD2 port indicate anything abnormal? Also, does each diagnostic capable control module independently generate its own voltage at 1 to 9 volts for connection to the K line pin 7?

Technically, all the devices on the K-line use an "Open Collector" type output, meaning all the should be capable of doing is pulling the K-line to ground. It is the scan tool's job to provide a pull-up resistor.

This means the voltage on the K-line without a scan-tool connected is indeterminate, because none of the the module's outputs should be driving it low, but there will always be some small leakage current and the amount and direction of this leakage current will determine the open-circuit voltage.

So if I understand your answer correctly if each control module connected on the k line were operating perfectly
with no leakage then the k line would show 9 volts between pin 7 and pin 4? And the more control module leakage the lower the voltage between pin 7 and ground pin 4?
