F189 is the Multifuction/Range Selector switch on the side of the transmission. ...
It is operated by the shift cable and sends the gear selection info to the TCU. Check the harness connector from the F189 for corrosion on the wire terminals or loose fitting terminals etc.
Usually, the F189 must be replaced in this situation.

Correction: F189 is the tiptronic up/down shift switch in the gear shift mechanism...
not the multifunction range selection switch on the side of the transmission. Sorry for the screw up.
