I figured it was a CP going bad but kinda hard to diagnose when almost all of the Cylinders are showing misfires. Any ideas? Replace all? This happens like once ever 3 months after hard driving.

Try new spark plugs first.

Really. Spark plugs are only a year old but I guess I could try that.

Default what plugs did you put in? what gap did you use?

how are your usual maintenance items, like air filter? O2 sensors? how about your ignition amps? cleaned your MAF?

Default Not sure about the gap but the plugs are supposed to be OEM NGK's...

They were installed by my indy shop about a year and 4 months ago. At the same time, I had replaced all my coil packs because we were chasing down a mysterious intermittent misfire count seen in VAG-COM on all cylinders but the engine is perfectly smooth. Although we never found the source, they just seemed to disappear after several tanks of 93 Chevron with Techron, but every now and then I can still monitor them at idle. Another tech thinks it could be the engine speed sensor and the misfire codes are false.

I bought the car used a year and a half ago with 118k on the clock (03 3.0qms) and it was maintained by the dealer per schedule. Since I've had it, I've just changed:

* Air filters (2X)
* Fuel pump & filter (recall, but no issues)
* All 6 coil packs (had no issues)
* Timing Belt was done at dealer per schedule
* And 3 Full Synthetic oil changes (car has always had full synth)
* Some broken vac lines

I've not got 140k miles on the car and besides these intermittent misfire codes every now and then, the car runs like it was new. I just started having the Flashing CEL and bad CP symptons this past New Years day. I figured it was a bad CP but can't seem to figure out which one. I'm baffled.

I'm going to pull the plugs and check the gaps later on today since I didn't see them put them in. I'm assuming the gap for a 3.0 is .032

Check my old post

Default Only occurs after "hard drive", but never with cold driveline?

I think its a faulty crankshaft speed sensor. You can log the sensor output waveform over time and see if the output is glitchy with signal drop outs, etc. When you are observing phantom misfires at idle speed, a scope monitoring the crank speed sensor will likely show output signal faults occuring at the same time and rate as the phantom misfires.

Default What blocks do I look at in VAC COM to see the crankshaft speed sensor?

You've said this may be the culprit before but I didn't know there was a way to see it in VAG COM.

Default There is no measuring block with raw crank speed sensor signal output. That would have to be ...

monitored by inductive pickup directly, and the signal waveform viewed/logged on a scopemeter.
Replacing the crank speed sensor speculativley, is the alternative.

Default I have a Bentley, and I've yet to figure out where that part is and how much it would be.

The Bentley sucks!
