Just got my KEY-USB cable from Ross-Tech, but I can't get it to communicate with my laptop...

Just got my KEY-USB cable from Ross-Tech, but I can't get it to communicate with my laptop...
the LED on the cable lights up when i plug it in...the "Found New Hardware" wizard pops up in Windows when I plug it in...but when i search for the software Windows is telling me they can't find it...any ideas?
Car: 96 A4QM 12V
Laptop: Averatec 3220H1, Windows XP SP2, Athlon XP-M 2000 running at 1 GHZ, 512MB RAM
EDIT: oh yea, and when i open the vag-com software and try to test the usb port, i get this error message:
"Ross-Tech USB Interface Not Found!
Interface: Not Found!"
