Is the software for an '04 allroad any different from an '02?

Is the software for an '04 allroad any different from an '02?
Tried to VAG a friends 2004 allroad this evening and got error messages. Plugged into my '02 and had no problems.
On the '04, the connector light was flashing between green and red. Couldn't perform any VAG functions without the error message that it couldn't communicate with the KLine?
Is this a problem with my software or is the OBD port of the '04 a problem?

If it's flashing, use "VAG-COM > Options > Test" it should tell you what's up.
Also check for an aftermarket radio!<ul><li><a href="http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/aftermarket-radio.html">http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/aftermarket-radio.html</a</li></ul>

Car is dead stock (except for wheels and tires and sway bars)...
ok it isn't pure stock, but does have the factory head unit.
I ran the test and it tells me the comm port is ok. And I tested it by plugging into my '02 allroad and everything worked just fine. The test didn't tell me anything else that I could determine. But I did have a hard time getting a green light. Had to wiggle the connector at the OBD port to get it to turn green. Otherwise I had a red light.
When I tried to VAG the'04, here's what I got:
Interface Status=3
Interface Not Ready!
Possible Reasons:
*Incorrect COM port selected
*Interface not plugged in
*Inition not turned On
*K-Line Stuck
Obviously the first 3 don't apply since I was able to ruel each one out. It's the 4th- K-Line Stuck- that I don't know how to evaluate.
Thanks for your help.

Old Twin-Comm, got it probably 4-5 yrs ago, Release 311.2-N.
Y'all have helped me swap license from really old laptop to the only slightly old Dell laptop I run it on a couple of years ago.
In the last 2 weeks, I've had no problem VAGing another '02 allroad, an '01 allroad, an '02 A6 2.8 and my own '02 allroad.
I can email you the certificate number if you like.
