Default Third Party Vag-Com interface / cable

Has anyone used one of the 3rd party cables you see on eBay and had any success.
I bought one and it kind of works. I can get the engine controller to respond but thats it. What I really wanted it for is the radio and Nav but they don't connect.
Or is it best just to buy the Ross-Tech interface / cable?

Thanks

Steve
