VAG-COM read codes in non VAG cars?
Strange request- but will VAG-COM at least give a code for a CEL on a non VAG car? Need to check why I have a CEL in my Lotus Elise and the dealer is 4 hours away... I see other PC based OBD2 readers for other cars and wondered if since the Lotus is OBD2 compatable, would it at least give me a code number? Or, as I suspect, am I dreaming???

Since version 500.0 there is a generic OBD-2 mode that works with a couple of models...
...can't tell if it works with your particular model, but feel free to try it.<ul><li><a href="http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/tour/obd-2.html">http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/tour/obd-2.html</a</li></ul>

I've had extremely good luck with most Euro and Asian....
And I'm assuming that the engine electronics in the Elise are Asian. Definitely worth a try.
Only cars I've had trouble getting into have been various '03 and later Mercedes cars.

it worked!
In the generic mode it read the code and I cleared it. Manufacturer specific emissions code. Saved me having to buy another scan tool. Thanks again Ross-Tech! (hard to say whether it's euro or asian as the engine is Toyota and the car is british...)

Assuming you have a +CAN interface, did you try "Bypass CAN Init" on those MBs?
