Default VCDS question.

I have OBDII -USB cable downloaded VCDS and it does not connect.. do I really have to pay $200+ for a VCDS specified cable? I have searched and searched and not found a troubleshooting that worked. Maybe just completely factory reset the laptop and try again? About the only thing I haven't tried.

Yes, return whatever you bought and purchase the real deal from Ross Tech.

These other cables are nothing but a cruel tease in terms of functionality.

You won't regret it.
If you ever decide to sell it you will likely get most of your money back too

So if I make this purchase and they update everything does that mean I have to repurchase it?

Software updates are always free for genuine interfaces.
Many people have been using them for a decade or more.

I suppose if there was a major change to the OBD connector or the protocols you may need an adapter, but I don't see that in the foreseeable future.
For example when VAG went from 2x2 to J1962 there was an adapter available.

I recently upgrade my HEX-CAN to HEX-NET and it was absolutely worth it and gives me more flexibility.
The old cable I traded with a friend of mine for and got most of the cost back.
