In your ad you mentioned needs a/c work. That is pretty broad. Is it something simple or a new system?

When I had it checked a month ago, the compressor doesn't turn on, and no power to compressor, so probably a relay too. It was leaking last seasons and I had it recharged. Couldn't find a leak with dye, etc. So I'm going to guess a repair to that system looks like a compressor, relay, and some stop leak stuff in the system.

The dealer quoted me to pull the dash and try to find a leak with no guarantee it would work after that last season.

I'm not good with AC, I don't really understand it or know how to work on it.

So I bought a new (to me) car instead.

Any $$ estimate on the AC work? Price seems fair but wouldn't want to get stuck with a big bill.

Here's what I know:

System had a slow leak in 2012/2013 - recharged and dyed. Couldn't find the leak.
Quoted $1500 from the dealer in 2014 to find a leak in the system by pulling the dash out. No guarantee they would find the leak. I said no thanks.
Took the car in before offering for sale to inspect for issues - indy mechanic states a new compressor is needed, no power coming from relay, will need a recharge.

AC Compressors can be had for between $250 and $500. OEM is $750. Relay is cheap. Stop leak for AC systems is cheap.

With the major items complete on the car (Transmission, Timing Belt, Water Pump, Idler Pullies, Serp Belts, Brakes Flush, Rotors, Pads) and new all season tires, battery, all repair receipts, manuals, keys, etc, it's priced right.
If you buy the car and have to put a grand in it for the AC, you are going to have an awesome car for the next 100k. Or buy it for a winter beater and impress your friends. I put a lot of time, money, and effort into keeping it in shape. You can be the next to benefit from it.

I'd like it to go to an enthusiast who'll appreciate it for what the S8 truly is; a very rare, impressive, powerful, and classic german sedan.

With it being the dead of summer and you have provided a cost breakdown from your mechanic to fix the a/c would you consider fixing it first prior to sale.

I would feel more comfortable paying for a car with major parts working with no surprises in the short term instead of buying then getting the car back to NC to repair and it being more than anticipated.

Please let me know if this is an option?

Perhaps. Really don't want to do that, which is why I purchased another car. If that was the path taken , the price would reflect the additional parts. IOW, go up commensurately. On the other hand, something might be able to be done on purchase price. PM if interested.
