Default Audi Newbie / Fox GTI Info

Hi all,

I just bought a 1979 Audi Fox for my 40th Birthday present. It is a really clean car with a nice big sun roof, white paint and tan interior, manual trans. Rust free as well! I have had many old cars but this is my 1st Audi. The 1st new car I ever bought was a 1990 VW Fox, different I know, but I like the body style and simplicity of the car. I am thinking the build quality of the Audi is much superior!

The original owner mentioned this was/could be a GTI but no GTI badging and standard interior with standard steering wheel and seats.Anyone know if this could be the case? (I doubt it myself) Is the engine different in the GTI version?

Any info greatly appreciated !

Brian

Default Wow, that's beautiful!

The blue one looks like a 70's Coupe. Is the paint on the Fox original or respray?

Actually, I bought it from a guy on eBay. He is an Audi enthusiast and has at least 4 Audi's. It is a pretty original car, 106K miles and rust free. I was looking for a fun car that I could detail a little and keep original. The big sun roof sold me ! I used to be into muscle cars and got really tired of the competition and huge prices for every thing. I paid 3x more $$ just for the Cobra Jet motor in my old Cougar than I did for this whole clean car ! I wanted a grocery getter not a 400HP rocket ! So here it is !

Brian,

Congratulations and welcome. The Fox GTIs were sold in the U.S. in 1978 and 1979 and came in silver only. They also came with Fox GTI decals ('78 decals/badges are different from '79). They also came with a different steering wheel and sport seats (most seem to have been corduroy). As far as I know, there really weren't any performance modifications.

Yours is not a GTI, but definitely IS a nice Fox!

I also have muscle cars in my past.....a 1965 Pontiac Tempest/GTO clone, a 1973 Ford Mustang Mach I (with a built 351) and a 1973 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham series 75 with all of the limousine options (power trunk, fold down footrests in the rear, etc.). My dad had a 1970 340 six pack AAR Cuda (the AAR was SUPER rare). I wish he had it today!

As I said, welcome to AudiWorld. It's nice to have another who appreciates vintage Audis (that don't necessarily go fast!).

-Rob

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the GTI info. I have been studying some photo's I see on line and see that what your saying about the colors etc. I also noticed the bumpers and bright trim are flat black on GTI's , interiors all seem to be gray or black as well with no wood on the dash face. Any how, I like the stripes on the lower side so I may add that to mine and look around for some original alloys. I also may look for a GTI steering wheel but am thinking they are hard to find,

Do you have any contacts for someone that can redo the dash pad. Mine is baked and cracked, I assume they don't repop these?

Hey cool cars on you end as well! The AAR would be a $100K car today or more, but c'mon it's a car! My Cougar was on of 69 built in 68' with a 428CJ. I was afraid to drive it as it was a mark to get stolen and parted. The ram air cleaner was worth like $1500 alone. Took the fun out of it for me. They are good investments though.
