Help Doc, and others, looking for a smooth riding tire for the A8!
I am in the minority here it seems - I like the A8 for its "luxury" - because of the way it looks inside (mostly) and out (LED lights, etc.); and because of its technology; etc.
I could care less about speed, taking corners at 80 miles an hour, etc.
It is all but impossible for me to find a "luxury" riding tire.
Everything that comes up on tirerack.com is, because of the car, a high performance sport tire.
I am looking for the "softest", smoothest, quietest, riding tire I can find for the A8 in the 19" and 20" size.
Any help (Doc), and others, would be greatly appreciated!

Which model year A8 ?
If you have 255/45R19, only the OE Continental ProContact or Pirelli PZero Nero AS (both H speed rated) would come close to meeting your requirements.
If you have 265/40R20, the same PZero Nero AS is the only candidate.

Audi requires an XL or Reinforced tire for use on the A8, and while the P7 would be the probably the most comfortable option in your size we cannot recommend due to its (standard) load rating.
If you were to find a set of P7's along the side of the road, its doubtful most shops would install due to liability concerns.

I have to disagree with DOC that the A8L has to have XL tires. My rep at tirerack says while XL is standard its not a must to have as long as the load rating is close to stock. I have 120k miles on my 2012 Audi A8L (drive 25k miles a year highway) and I have bought many tires from tirerack without original XL load and had no issues. I am running 255/45R20 Michelin Pilot Sport AS3 during spring to fall months on my A8L vs the standard 265/40R20 and that is within 2% speedo error. The ride is very smooth. I use to have 19s and i ran the Michelin Pilot Sport as3 on those too and they were 101Y standard load and no issues. I use winter tires in size 19 so I am not concern about the Michelin Pilot AS3 in the snow.
Thus to OP definitely go with the 19s Pirelli P7 Plus in size 255/45R19 or go with the new updated 255/45R19 Michelin Pilot Sport AS3 plus which will ride very comfy on this car. The Pirellis have better tread wear and snow traction. We have put that on a friends 2014 S550 and its very comfy and smooth too.
If you have 20s then you can try the Continental DWS 06 size 275/40R20 but some ppl say its too soft but it may be good for you.

ON paper, a "standard load" tire is safe to use as long as you keep a close eye on your pressures. Difficulty is on the installation side when most shops will afraid to install the non XL tire. Depending on road conditions, a non XL tire is also more vulnerable to pothole / road hazard damage.
Given that "the internet is forever", I tend to encourage use of the XL tire for the reasons mentioned above.
