Winter Tire Lifespan
This is my first winter going up the the mountains regularly so I bought a set of Michelin X-Ice. However, I live in Northern California where winters are mild so Ive only been throwing the snow tires on right before I head up then pulling them off to preserve the trend. Swapping tires has become quite the chore though since I go up 2-3 times a month so I'm considering just leaving the winter tires on for the whole season. I know the trend will wear faster but I'd be content getting 1 full season out of them. Anyone else in a similar situation? Trying to guage whether or not the winters will last at least one whole season when the majority of driving will be in mild winter climate.

Most of us in the Pacific Northwest put the winter set on after thanksgiving, and take them off after spring break, or when skiing is over. 1/3 a year for the snow set, and that's all the swapping that will be done. Tires will last years.

My plan is exactly he above and will run dws06s during the rest of the year. I don't expect the winter wheels to be on the car more than 4 months a year, sometimes less.

I'd expect the the XIce to last at least a year or better if used "all season", but the primary concern we have is not the durability but the safety aspect of using a snow tire in warm weather; the added tread depth / siping combined with the soft rubber compounds will feel like they "squirm" at higher speeds affecting steering response and lateral stability. The rubber compound also tends to be a little slippery in wet conditions (when in the 70's or warmer), so we would never recommend using the XIce as an all season / daily driver tire. The tire will perform the best and wear the most when temps are in the 40's and colder.
