Audi A6 C5: Why is My Car Overheating?

An overheating engine is a serious problem that could cost your Audi A6 C5 a new engine. Read on to learn how to diagnose it.

This article applies to the Audi A6 C5 (1998-2004).

Every once and in a while, you could notice your temperature gauge going through the roof in the Audi A6 C5. The first thing to do when your car starts heating up is to pull over and turn the engine off. The last thing you want is your engine overheating and ruining all your seals as well as gaskets, perhaps even blowing. There are various parts that could fail, causing your engine to overheat. This article will help you diagnose your overheating problem, and it may even help you get it back on the road quickly. Read on to learn how to diagnose an overheating engine.

Materials Needed

  • Socket set
  • Flashlight

Step 1 – Check coolant

You could be low on coolant.

Check the coolant reservoir for proper coolant level. Your coolant runs around through rubber hoses, and due to weather conditions, some of your hoses could crack and leak. If you're indeed low on coolant, check all the radiator hoses for leaks: the lower ones and the upper ones. Use your flashlight to get a good visual under your vehicle. Also, inspect around the radiator for any signs of green liquid, which is the coolant. A coolant leak can definitely cause an overheating issue. Make sure you don't drive you vehicle with low coolant, so change the leaking hose, and refill the coolant reservoir.

If your coolant level is proper, continue on to Step 2.

Step 2 – Check cooling fan's wires

They could be worn or cracked.

The cooling fan is designed to cool your radiator at low speeds, which keeps it cool when it reaches a certain temperature. The cooling fan has a module located right on top of it; this module is what controls the operation of the fan. It's common for the fan's wiring to crack and wear, thus not giving the cooling fan the proper signal. If the fan doesn't get the signal, it doesn't turn on, thus your engine overheating. Check the wiring going into the module and make sure they are in good shape. You can replace the module, the wiring, or the fan if it doesn't rotate. So try rotating it with your hand to make sure its clutch isn't faulty.

If the fan's electrical connections are in good shape, proceed to Step 3.

Step 3 – Check thermostat

It could be stuck closed.

The thermostat is a little device, located between your lower radiator hose and your engine. This little device is designed to stay closed until your engine reaches its optimal temperature. When your engine heats up to approximately 200 degrees Fahrenheit, the thermostat opens up to let coolant flow through the radiator to keep it from overheating. When the thermostat goes bad, it could get stuck closed, so when the engine reaches its optimal temperature, it prevents coolant from going through the engine and cause the temperature to continue rising until it overheats. The best way to determine a bad thermostat is if the car's temperature gauge rises after five to 15 minutes. If you want to be sure, remove the thermostat and put it in boiling water; if it doesn't open, then you have a faulty thermostat.

If the thermostat is working properly, proceed to Step 4.

Step 4 – Check water pump

It could be faulty.

The water pump pumps water into the engine to keep it cool. A faulty water pump can result in an engine overheating. There are a few things that can go wrong with the water pump, and the most common issue is a leaking one. Put a piece of cardboard under your Audi's engine, then inspect it the next morning; if you see water on it, then your water pump is leaking. Also, grab a hold of your water pump pulley, then wiggle it in and out; if it moves with you, then your bearings are bad and it's time for a new water pump.

If the water pump is working properly and not leaking, proceed to Step 5.

Step 5 – Check your radiator

It could be faulty.

If you've checked everything above and everything is in good working order, then you may have a bad radiator. The radiator cools the coolant, sends it to the warm engine, then the engine uses it to cool down and sends it back into the radiator to cool it down, continuing the cycle. Check the radiator for any leaks, check it for any rust, and check the cap on the outside or inside. A bad radiator cap builds too much pressure, which prevent the radiator from cooling the antifreeze. It is a good idea to perform a radiator flush to make sure it's nice and clean inside.
